THE PORTUGUESE LOVE TO EAT!
BUT CAN THEY EAT... FAST?
A Bit About The Arroz Doce Eating Contest at Battle of the Bifanas
In 2025, we introduced what quickly became one of the most unforgettable attractions at Battle of the Bifanas—the very first Arroz Doce Eating Contest.
The idea was simple: Portuguese culture is built on a love of food, especially desserts—and a little friendly competition. After tossing around different ideas, one choice stood above the rest: arroz doce (rice pudding), a beloved classic that every family proudly claims to make best. While that debate may never be settled, we found a new way to crown a champion--by seeing who can eat the most, the fastest.
And just like that, a phenomenon was born.
Thousands of spectators gathered around as eight brave contestants took their seats at the table. What followed was ten minutes of nonstop action—some competitors bowed out early, others pushed through with determination, and a few delivered moments the crowd will never forget. It was messy, intense, and wildly entertaining—all in the spirit of good fun.
In the end, one champion emerged after a dramatic final showdown that had the entire crowd on edge.
Now, we’re bringing it back for another year—bigger, better, and even more exciting. With the support of our friends at Santa Clara’s Portuguese Tasty Desserts, this year’s contest is set to be a can’t-miss event.
